Occurence of air-bronchogram in bronchogenic carcinoma

Abstract

Air-bronchogram(ABG) is diagnostic of an alveolar disease. Of the neoplastic conditions, alveolar cell carcinoma, lymphomaa and various metastatic neoplasms involving the lung are known to manifest ABG. The occurence of ABG in broncho genic carcinoma has been asc¡þribed to incomplete central type obstruction of bronchus with obstructive pneumonia. Review of the literature failed to disclose previous report on occurence of ABG in peripheral squamous cell bronchogenic carcinoma where no central obstructive lesion is present. Recently we have experienced a case of peripheral squamous cell type carcinoma of the lung which showed typical ABG in the absence of central obstructive lesion. The mechanism of ABG in this case was assumed to be the results of pulmonary hemorrhage around carcinoma. From our observation it seems warranted to state that the presence of ABG in a peripheral mass shadow of the lung does not necessarily exclude bronchogenic carcinoma.
